It's one of the busiest places for pedestrians and cars in Santa Barbara, especially for tourists.
Stearns Wharf needs safety upgrades, and the city is considering a plan to add 600 feet of new railing on the Wharf.
That railing would go mainly on the far end, where people fish daily over the side and others stroll and take pictures.
There have been some high-profile accidents over the years, including a man in a wheelchair going over the side, and a car falling into the ocean when the driver hit the gas while parking.
The wharf has deep history in California. It was built in 1872 to transfer cargo and people from ships to shore, and is the oldest working wharf in the state, has survived two major fires.
