There’s more shocking news about the destruction caused by the massive Thomas brush fire in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.
The figure of homes destroyed was already stunning, at 640 homes lost. But, officials tonight updated the number to 868 homes lost.
525 homes were destroyed in the City of Ventura, and 342 in the unincorporated part of Ventura County. One home has been lost in Santa Barbara County.
Firefighters caution the assessment is not complete, and the numbers will continue to change.
Meanwhile, fire commanders say efforts to contain the blaze went well today. The amount of acres burned only slightly grew today, going from 230,000 acres to 231,000 acres. The containment figure went from 15% to 20%. Mild wind conditions helped the firefighting efforts. Firefighters say their efforts to keep the blaze from moving west out of the Carpinteria area to Montecito are going well.
