A cutting edge new U.S. Navy warship will be named after the City of Santa Barbara.
The 400 foot long trimaran-hull warship will be capable of speeds topping 40 knots. The futuristic looking craft are built for missions like surface and anti-submarine warfare.
The $580 million dollar craft will be built in Alabama, and based in San Diego.
It’s the third Navy ship to be named the USS Santa Barbara. The first was a freighter which had a brief history with the Navy, in 1918 and 1919. The second was an ammunition ship in service from 1970 to 1998.
