New Museum Exhibition on South Coast Mixes South Asian Art, Religion

New Santa Barbara Museum of Art exhibition highlights junction of art, religion

Art and religion are the co-stars of a brand new exhibition which just opened on the South Coast.

A Santa Barbara Museum of Art exhibit features South Asian items ranging from sculptures to tapestries.

Puja and Piety:  Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist Art from the Indian Subcontinent features some 160 sculptures, temple hangings, processional bronzes, and other works. The collection spans two thousand years of South Asian culture.

The pieces are religious artifacts for some, and artworks to others.

About half of the works are part of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art's growing South Asian art collection, while the other half are on loan from collectors.

The exhibition runs through August 28th at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.
