Excitement High About LA Getting 2028 Olympics, But Ventura, Santa Barbara Counties Not Part Of Plan

Aug 4, 2017

Excitement is high about word the Summer Olympics will be returning to Los Angeles in 2028.

The South Coast was a part of the Games when LA hosted them in 1984. This time around however, there are no plans for Olympic venues in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties played an important, but now largely forgotten part in the Games 33 years ago.

Lake Casitas was home to two Olympic events, canoeing and rowing. Santa Barbara’s East Beach was the scene of windsurfing, which was an exhibition event, and UC Santa Barbara served as one of the Olympic Villages.

LA’s bid for the 2024 Games, which is being used as the basis for the 2028 Games doesn’t include any venues for the South Coast. Plans call for the canoeing and rowing events to be held at Lake Perris, in Riverside County. Officials at Lake Casitas say they’d still love the chance to be considered as a venue, and the games are 11 years away, so things could potentially change.
