Children Participate In Spelling Bee In Ventura County

Student Geraldine Cabanan spells a word during the Bee

More than a hundred South Coast kids competed in a spelling bee this weekend.

The SAGE Ventura County Spelling Bee took place at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks on Saturday with 127 third through eighth-graders.

Eleven-year-old Jacqueline Abutin of Camarillo who participated says she enjoys spelling difficult words.

"It's kind of just like a pride thing...it's like I can spell this. You don't have to look everything up and have to go through all the dictionaries in Google. You kind of just have to try to find patterns in different words, like how most words end in "SCH" or "INE," she says.

This marks the Bee’s 54th year in the region and the second time being hosted by SAGE Publishing.

The winner will represent Ventura County in the Scripps National Spelling Bee this May in Maryland.
