Autopsy Pending For Inmate Found Dead At Ventura County Jail Facility

An autopsy is pending for a man who died in a South Coast jail.

Russell Fries was arrested on a public intoxication charge early Saturday morning in Simi Valley. The 55 year old man was taken to a hospital for evaluation for a pre-existing medical condition, and then booked at the county’s Pre-Trial Detention facility.

Ventura County Sheriff’s officials say because of his intoxication, Fries was placed in a special sobering cell and frequently checked. Deputies doing a check at around 7:30 Saturday morning say they discovered the Simi Valley man wasn’t breathing. CPR was started, and paramedics called, but he was pronounced dead at the jail.

Officials say there is no evidence of foul play.
