Voters Reject Effort To Restrict Oil And Gas Development In San Luis Obispo County

A measure to ban new oil wells and fracking in unincorporated areas of San Luis Obispo County has been defeated.

With all precincts reporting, Measure G is failing by a 56% to 44% margin.

Some 78,000 votes have been counted.  There are potentially thousands of mail in ballots yet to be counted, but there is a more than nine thousand vote gap.

If the measure had been approved, it’s expected it would have triggered lawsuits. There are question over what the county can regulate, because other governmental agencies are charged with regulating oil and gas drilling.
