Two-Vehicle Crash On Central Coast Leaves Animal Dead, Woman With Major Injuries

Santa Barbara County Fire Department
Emergency crews respond to crash that killed a donkey and seriously injured a woman.

Authorities on the Central Coast are investigating a two-vehicle crash, involving a reported stolen car, that left an animal dead and a woman with major injuries.

It happened on Saturday around 5:30 am on Highway 154 near Foxen Canyon Road in the Buellton area. Santa Barbara County Fire Captain Dave Zaniboni said one vehicle slammed into a donkey that was wandering in the area.

"That vehicle was in the roadway with the donkey when a second vehicle approached and swerved to miss them," he said.  "When that second vehicle swerved, it ended up rolling over and landing in a front yard of a home on Foxen Canyon Road."

The California Highway Patrol said 53-year-old Katrina Sue Cummings of Paso Robles, who was driving the vehicle that overturned, was ejected and suffered multiple skull fractures.

Investigators say a 2016 Jeep Rubicon, which was the first car to hit the donkey, was a stolen vehicle.  Its driver, identified as 24-year-old Peter Franklin of Solvang, was arrested.
