Thousands Of South Coast Commuters To Be Redirected For Months As Underpass Project Gets Started

Drivers are going to face new challenges in Santa Barbara near the waterfront, where thousands of cars will be detoured daily.

The Castillo Street underpass project is underway as of Monday.

Orange traffic cones are out, redirectional signs are up, the CHP is assisting, and Caltrans is at work on a street that has been dangerously wet for years.

Other solutions have been tried and failed, and now a full concrete pour on all lanes is the final option.

The closure will be in place until mid-August and the traffic that normally uses that ramp will be redirected to Garden and Carrillo streets.
