State Senator From South Coast Introduces Bill To Help Marine Mammals Caught In Fishing Gear

Whale tangled in fishing gear off California coast

A state senator who represents parts of the Central and South Coasts has introduced legislation to help whales, seals, and other marine mammals which become entangled in fishing gear, or are stranded on the coastline.

SB 290 by Democratic State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson of Santa Barbara would set up an emergency grant program to support groups authorized to help marine animals in trouble.

Jackson says there was a record 6,000 entangled, and stranded animals in 2015 and 2016 along the California coastline which were rescued.
