Special Forces Soldier From Central Coast Dies In Afghanistan

A Special Forces soldier from the Central Coast has died in Afghanistan, following what the Department of Defense is calling a non-combat related incident.

Sgt. 1st Class Robert R. Boniface died Sunday in Logar Province, Afghanistan. Pentagon officials say the incident is under investigation. No other details of the 34 year old man’s death were released.

The soldier from San Luis Obispo was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group headquartered at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.

The province in the east of the country has been the scene of heavy fighting as the Afghan government struggles to hold territory there against the Taliban.
