South Coast Officials Concerned That Groundwater Pumping May Allow Saltwater Intrusion

The Santa Barbara water supply now includes pumping from seven groundwater wells.

Those wells have been checked and, in some cases, upgraded in recent years to make sure they remain operational over the course of California's drought.

City officials are concerned, however, that full use of these wells is causing a drawdown that could allow for saltwater intrusion.

That's a situation they want to avoid, and one that could take years to reverse.

As a response, quarterly testing of the well water will be increased to ensure the water quality.
