South Coast Legislator Supports Tax, Fee Hikes For Highway, Road Infrastructure Improvements

A Ventura County legislator says she’s supporting the governor’s proposed gas and vehicle tax hikes, calling them a reasonable way to deal with badly needed infrastructure upgrades.

Democratic Assemblywoman Jacqui Irwin of Thousand Oaks says she’s never voted for a tax hike before, but believes the action is essential.

The Governor’s package would cost the average California motorist about $10.00 a month. It would increase the state tax on gasoline by 12 cents a gallon, to thirty cents, hike the cost of diesel fuel, and create a new annual vehicle fee. It would raise more than$50 billion dollars during the next decade for bridge and road repairs.  The State Assembly passed the Governor's package Thursday.
