South Coast Golfer Plays 10,000th Round; More Than 6,000 On Ventura County Course

Mar 9, 2018

It’s a beautiful day for golf.

But, it isn’t just any golf game for Bob Roth. The 86 year old Moorpark man is playing round number 10,000.

It started more than seven decades ago, in 1947, when he was a teenager.

But Roth really started playing golf in earnest in the 1950’s, when he was going to college in Arizona. Roth worked in the insurance field, in Wisconsin and Michigan before moving to California. Working in that field was perfect for meetings over a round of golf.

Then, when he retired in 1988, it left him even more time for golf. He’s played more than 500 courses, but one practically in his backyard, Saticoy Country Club in Somis, is where you’ll find him four or five days a week. He says more than 6,000 of his 10,000 rounds of golf have been at the Somis course.

Golf turned out to be a family passion. His wife, Dolores golfed, as do his two sons. In fact, one of his sons, and one of his grandsons are golf pros. For this special 10,000th round of golf, Roth’s sons JR and Stu, along with grandson Justin, fill out the foursome. Roth’s family members and friends flew in from around the country for a party to celebrate round number 10,000.

Family members say Roth used to be very competitive in the day, but that he’s mellowed over the years. He says it’s a great way to spend a day, especially when he’s doing it with family or friends.
