With the drought in its fifth year, one South Coast city has opened the door again to people getting rebates in exchange for replacing lawns with more water efficient landscaping.
The City of Ventura opened the application period this week for its Water Wise Incentive Program. Homeowners and businesses in the city can get rebates of $2 dollars a square foot of turf removed, up to a maximum of $3200 dollars a home, and $6400 per homeowners association or business.
The program is first come first served to those in the city, with limits on funding determining home many people and businesses can be helped.
Ventura officials say since the beginning of the program in 2015, more than 350,000 square feet of turf has been removed.
