South And Central Coast Scientists Create Model That They Hope Develops Ocean In Sustainable Way

South and Central Coast researchers say they created a model that they hope develops the ocean in a sustainable way.

Several industries utilize the ocean, such as fisheries, offshore wind farms and aquaculture, which is the farming of seafood.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo biology professor Crow White worked with UC Santa Barbara researchers to develop a model so that these different marine industries can most effectively and sustainably use the ocean.

“You’re trying to figure out how can we sustainably allow these new uses of the ocean to be developed and have them be profitable, but at the same time minimize the economic costs to our traditional uses of the ocean and minimize the impact on the environment,” he says.

Crow says the model they created takes into account these factors, and it can be applied anywhere.
