Small Flareups Reported With Whittier Brush Fire, But Containment Remains At 87%

Area south of Highway 154 in Santa Ynez Valley burned by Whittier brush fire

Santa Barbara County’s Whittier brush fire put up some visible smoke Thursday, but the more than two and a half week old blaze still remains at 87% containment.

Some plumes of smoke were visible coming from the Dos Pueblos Canyon area.

The fire has burned just over 18,000 acres of brush since starting off of Highway 154 south of Lake Cachuma July 8th.

With sundowner winds in the forecast for Thursday night, there could be some minor flareups in rugged, remote areas which could be visible to the public at night. About 300 firefighters are involved in mopup efforts.

The incident command post has been moved from Dos Pueblos High School, to the Los Prietos Ranger Station. With firefighting efforts continuing, drivers on Highway 154 are being urged to be cautious because of equipment on, and near the highway.
