Some firefighters on the Central and South Coast are starting inspections later this week to insure that brush has been properly cleared around homes and other structures in brush fire risk zones.
Santa Barbara County firefighters will begin checks starting Friday.
A minimum of 100 feet of clearance is required to insure crews have enough space to protect a structure from oncoming flames. If the clearance is inadequate, citations can be issued, with the work done by county contractors and billed to the property owner.
But, firefighters say most people understand the issue, especially in the wake of major blazes like the Thomas Fire, and have already moved to insure brush and other potentially flammable materials are removed.
