Roaming Black Bear Causes Shut Down Of South Coast School

Paula Perotte

Goleta City councilmember Paula Perotte snapped a picture when she saw something looking in the window at her dog, Apollo.

It was a 300-pound black bear.

That was one of the many sightings of the loose bear in the western end of the Goleta Valley.

Sheriff’s deputies and Fish and Wildlife officials came out and tracked the bear for several hours through neighborhoods, in a drainage area around the freeway and through Ellwood school, which was put in lock down.

Reverse 911 calls were made to area residents.

Eventually the bear was controlled with tranquilizer darts, and after it fell asleep, it was relocated into the back country.
