Renowned Oceanographer Scuba Dives At Channel Islands For National Event

Students and community members watch a "live dive" at Channel Islands National Park Visitor Center in Ventura by oceanograher Dr. Sylvia Earle.

Renowned oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle explores different species in the depths of the ocean at the Channel Islands this weekend. She conducted two live dives yesterday off Anacapa Island that was broadcast to the National Mall in Washington DC and to locals at the Channel Islands National Park Visitor Center at Ventura Harbor.

"I learned about nature...about how the sea works," said 11-year-old Jeni Carrillo of Santa Paula, who was among the crowd watching at the visitor center.

She and hundreds of other Ventura County students and their families also participated in citizen science by documenting species along the shoreline. The event was part of a national BioBlitz in which scientists, students and community members participate in hands-on science activities and identify species at national parks.
