A former metal processing facility on the South Coast which is now on a federal list of hazardous waste sites was the scene of a massive effort aimed at removing homeless squatters.
Oxnard Police aided by other law enforcement officers took part in a sweep Thursday to let the more than 80 people camped there that they were trespassing on the Halaco site.
Social service works came with the officers, to offer assistance in finding places to stay. The residents were told they have until December 5th to relocate, or face arrest. Public safety officials say they’ve received an increasing number of calls about problems at the site, aside from the fact the people are camping at an identified hazardous waste site.
The 37 acre Halaco site is on a federal superfund list awaiting funding for cleanup.
