Plans To Create Bicycle Route In South Coast City Get Sidetracked

Plans to change usage for Micheltorena Street in Santa Barbara to clear space for a bicycle route have taken a detour.

The city transportation committee has heard from residents, business owners and bicycle enthusiasts, and is looking for a new solution with a route that utilizes Sola Street nearby.

The Micheltorena Street Plan would require parking to be restricted for 4 blocks.

That aspect of the plan was largely opposed by business owners and residents, especially those who would be unable to walk several blocks to their homes if they had to relocate their cars.

A neighborhood group even threatened legal action after a controversial hearing on the plan.

The new plan using Sola Street will head back to the city council for a review and a vote in the coming weeks.
