New Library In The Works To Fill Void On South Coast

A new library will soon be opening in an area of Ventura that lost its library several years ago, and an event happening on Saturday will help to partly pay for this new branch.

Ventura Friends of the Library is holding a book sale from 10 am to 3 pm in front of the Von’s on Telegraph Road and Victoria Avenue. The nonprofit’s president, Kathy Thomson, says while the money collected from the book sale will benefit the library system in general, they’ll also be collecting donations for the new Hill Road Library on the East Side.

"The donations that we will be accepting will be used to equip the library, fill it with the necessary items and materials -- everything that we would need to make a library state-of-the-art for 21st century," she said.

In 2009, the Wright Library on Day Road closed due to budget cuts. Library officials say there is a need for library services on the East Side. So, the Board of Supervisors approved $200,000 in funding for this new library branch but additional money is needed.  The branch will be located on the 1000 block of Hill Road and is expected to open this fall.
