New Legislation Aims To Track Shark Behavior Along South Coast

Shark sightings along the Carpinteria-Summerland coastline have calmed down in recent weeks.

For most of the spring, there had been numerous sightings of both leopard sharks and great white sharks.

Many of those spotted near the shores were likely juveniles, while the adults were spotted further out.

Researchers have been involved in tagging operations there and in other areas of Southern California to track the sharks' behavior.

The work is being done with research on the great white shark population, throughy assembly bill 2191 that's moving through the state legislature with unanimous support.

That bill would provide further funding for research and public education around local beaches regarding the growing shark population.
