New Grand Jury Report Raises Questions About Overtime For Some Ventura County Employees

A new Ventura County Grand Jury report says some county employees who are eligible for overtime aren’t receiving it because they aren’t classified properly.

Some 25% of county employees are designated as exempt, and the report says while most legitimately are, some might actually fall into the non-exempt category.

The Grand Jury says the county needs to update its definitions of exempt, and non-exempt classifications to avoid potential lawsuits, or back wage payments. It also says the county needs to update its policies on what’s known as “administrative leave,” which is what the county uses to compensate salaried workers who work long hours. It says the potential for abuse exists under the current structure.

The report calls for regularly scheduled audits of workforce classifications and job descriptions, to insure the county is in compliance with labor laws.
