National Sporting Goods Chain Files For Bankruptcy; One South Coast Outlet To Close

The nation’s second largest sporting goods chain announced plans to close one of its half dozen Central and South Coast locations as part of a bankruptcy filing.

Sports Authority will close 140 of its more than 460 stores nationwide. The chain missed a $20 million dollar debt payment in January, leading to today’s bankruptcy filing.

Officials with the Denver based company are hoping the closings plus a nearly $600 million dollar loan will get the retailer back on track.

The company announced plans to shut down six California stores, including one in Camarillo. Sports Authority has five other stores in the region which aren’t on the closure list, including outlets In Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, Ventura, Goleta, and San Luis Obispo.
