Memorial service plans have been set for the Ventura County Sheriff’s sergeant who died trying to stop the gunman who went on a rampage at a Thousand Oaks club last week.
Sergeant Ron Helus will be honored at a public service Thursday at Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village. The noon service will be open to the public, but people are being advised to come early because of the large turnout expected.
Helus died last Wednesday night when he tried to stop a gunman at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks. He was one of 12 people who died in the attack before the gunman killed himself.
Helus spent three decades in law enforcement, and was preparing to retire. Sheriff Geoff Dean called Helus a true hero, giving his life in an effort to save others.
