Massive South Coast Brush Fire Now Tops 130,000 Acres; Containment Hits 10%

An Amtrak train passes through an area of the Rincon charred by the Thomas brush fire

The amount of acreage burned by the destructive Thomas brush fire on the South Coast continues to mushroom, reaching 132,000 acres Friday morning.

Containment has risen from 5% to 10%.

Firefighters may not be getting the break they were hoping for with the weather this weekend. Forecasters had originally predicted the Santa Ana wind conditions to ease off as we move into the weekend, but they now say we could see high fire danger through Sunday night.

There was concern about growth of the fire on two sides of the fire Thursday night, near the Fillmore/Santa Paula area, and Carpinteria/Summerland areas. While the fire did grow in size, no additional homes were damaged. More than 430 structures have been destroyed by the fire.
