Man Jumps In Ocean In Santa Barbara, And Fights Efforts To Rescue Him

Family members of a man were looking for him because they believed he was unstable and possibly a risk to himself or others.

Santa Barbara Police found him in the ocean under Stearns Wharf Thursday, where he eluded officers on board two harbor patrol boats.

Fire, AMR, and waterfront staff were also present, and helped keep onlookers away from the end of the wharf while the incident unfolded.

At one point the man agreed to climb a ladder and come out, but then he ran naked over the far end of the wharf past police, and jumped over the railing into the ocean again.

Eventually he surrendered and was taken in for evaluation. It's unclear if he'll face any charges.
