Firefighters say they continue to make progress towards controlling the huge Thomas brush fire in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.

The acreage burned only grew about a thousand acres Wednesday, bringing the total to 238,000 acres. Containment is up from 25% to 30%.

Firefighters say they are focused on trying to take on the fire head on as much as possible, but one of the options under consideration is using backfires to remove fuel between the blaze, and Santa Barbara’s front country.

The most active parts of the fire include Santa Barbara’s front country, and the Matilija and Sespe wilderness areas. Close to 8000 people from 10 states are now involved in the battle against the fire.
