Some Central Coast communities are trying a unique approach to make it safer for people trying to buy or sell items through online marketplaces.

Maybe you find something you want to buy online from Craigslist, or other online marketplaces. Maybe it's even a car. But, how comfortable do you feel meeting someone you don’t know, possibly with hundreds or thousands of dollars in cash? In San Luis Obispo County, law enforcement agencies are stepping up to help by creating what are called “safe exchange zones.”

San Luis Obispo County Supervisor John Peschong went to the agencies with the plan.

The zones are designated parking spots which are monitored at all times by law enforcement video surveillance cameras.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office, along with Grover Beach, Pismo Beach, Arroyo Grande, and Morro Bay Police departments are taking part. The areas will have posted safe exchange zone signs.

While law enforcement agencies won’t have officers there, the hope is the cameras will help protect buyers and sellers.
