It's The Top Crop On The Central And South Coasts, But What Do You Really Know About Strawberries?

As many as 60,000 people are expected to take part in a weekend long celebration of all things strawberry on the South Coast this weekend. But, there’s a lot to the top crop in the region than you probably don’t know.

While all strawberries might look the same to you, there are some 20 different types grown, and harvested in the region.  And, even though they are only about a two hour drive apart, there are different peak growing seasons for strawberries in Ventura, and Santa Barbara Counties.

With the 35th annual California Strawberry Festival set for May 19th and 20th in Oxnard, KCLU's Lance Orozco talks with an expert about the popular fruit.

Lance Orozco has been News Director of KCLU since 2001, providing award-winning coverage of some of the biggest news events in the region, including the Thomas and Woolsey brush fires, the deadly Montecito debris flow, the Borderline Bar and Grill attack, and Ronald Reagan's funeral.
