Highway 101 Remains Closed In Montecito, But Commuters Can Bypass Closure By Rail, Boat

Crews work to remove mud on Highway 101 in Montecito from Tuesday's flash flooding

Highway 101 remains closed in the Montecito area due to the flooding, and officials continue to say it will be at least Monday before it reopens.   But, there are rail and boat alternatives.

With sections of Highway 192 closed from Carpinteria to Santa Barbara, and many surface streets also still shut down, you still can’t drive between Summerland and Santa Barbara.

The 101 is open from Ventura to Carpinteria. But, you can travel by train, or even boat to Santa Barbara.  After railroad tracks damaged in the Montecito area were repaired, Pacific Surfliner service resumed Thursday between Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.

Island Packers, which normally offers boat expeditions to the Channel Islands from Ventura County is running commuter boat service to Santa Barbara. And, the Condor Express, which does whale watching trips out of Santa Barbara Harbor, is offering temporary service to Ventura County.
