PG&E proposal calls for keeping Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant open now, but total shutdown by 2025

PG and E’s proposal to close the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant by 2025 will be the focus of some hearings in San Luis Obispo this week.

The State Public Utilities Commission will hold a pair of what it’s calling Public Participation Hearings on Thursday. PG&E worked out a plan with the support of some environmental groups calling for the plant to remain open for the next few years, while a plan is developed for its shutdown by 2025.

The proposal has generated controversy, with some people calling for an early shutdown, citing the continued concern about the potential for a nuclear accident. But others, including some local government officials support a gradual shutdown, so plans can be made to deal with environmental and financial impacts of the plant’s closure.

The CPUC hearings to gather public comments will take place at 1:30 and 7 p.m. Thursday at the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden.
