Health Officials Link Two Human Cases Of Swine Flu To Pig At Mid-State Fair

Public health officials on the Central Coast say two people developed swine flu as the result of their exposure to an infected pig at the California Mid-State Fair.

San Luis Obispo County Public Health officials say it was Influenza A, technically known as H1N2.

It can be transmitted to people in close contact with pigs, if the pig sneezes, or someone touches an infected surface area.

Mid-State Fair officials say that only one hog of the 562 exhibited was infected, and that the two people infected were in direct contact with it. The two people have recovered.

Health officials say it usually can’t be spread from person to person, so no additional cases are anticipated. But, they say people exposed to the pigs should be alert to flulike illnesses. Fair officials say they are reviewing all of their health protocols and procedures.
