Work officially started Monday on a new South Coast resort which has been talked about for more than a decade.
A groundbreaking event took place for the Rosewood Miramar Beach Montecito, a high end 161 room resort on what was the site of the community’s historic Miramar Resort.
The new hotel will feature cottages and bungalows, an oceanfront restaurant and bar, a 6,000 square foot ballroom, and a members only beach club. It’s the latest project from developer Rick Caruso, who built “The Grove” shopping, entertainment, and dining complex in Los Angeles, and closer to home, “The Lakes” center in Thousand Oaks.
Plans call for the new resort to open in the summer of 2018. The project went through years of public review, with its size reduced multiple times before it received final approval.
The original resort was closed in 2000, after a developer bought it with plans to rebuild it. Those plans fell through, as did efforts by a second owner, who eventually sold to Caruso. The Los Angeles developer went through years of review, and then after getting approval waited to build because of the shaky economy.
