Fire At Homeless Camp Brings Flames Near Highway 101

Oct 17, 2017

Smoke and flames along a Summerland cliff near Highway 101 brought out the fire department Monday morning.

A burning homeless camp was the source of the flames, off the highway toward the ocean.

The man living there was not seriously hurt. He says he was cooking chicken when a blanket caught fire.

The site of the fire is well known as a shanty area on the hillside that can be seen from the air or the ocean.

It has makeshift structures and have been there for months.

Many agencies including CalTrans, Union Pacific and the county have been contacted, but so far no action has been taken.
