Cutback In Priests Affecting Services At Santa Barbara Mission

A busy schedule and a cutback in priests has lead to the elimination of the 7:30 am Sunday mass at the Santa Barbara Mission.

Parishioners say that mass has been taking place for about 35 years.

Father Larry Gosselin says there are only two priests left there.

He says there will still be a Saturday evening mass and three on Sunday, along with the daily masses at Poor Clare's monastery nearby.

Mission San Miguel to the north is down to one priest, and facing similar challenges.

Father Gosselin is also leaving this week, at least temporarily.

He will head to the Vatican on the occasion of the canonization of Mother Teresa, who he spent time with in 1994 Calcutta.
