Controversy Over Proposals To Limit Access To Popular South Coast Beach

A long range development plan for Santa Barbara County shows changes in the Santa Claus Lane beach access points.

The county is considering a section that would make the area safer than having the public cross the tracks at multiple locations to get to the beach.

The single location would be in the middle of the most used stretch between Padaro Lane and Santa Claus Lane businesses.

In summer of 2011 the county conducted an on-site beach user survey at Santa Claus Lane beach to gather information  to find out how people get to the beach, how often they go and other information.

Many surf camps and other group users often use the access location and worry having a single location would make their efforts more difficult.

The plan calls for lights, fencing and crossing aids to help pedestrians get past the rails safely in an area that is very dangerous.

Crossing tracks outside of designated crossing areas is legally trespassing.
