Environmentalists and community activists are getting an early Christmas present on the South Coast. A Texas based company has dropped its controversial proposal to build a power plant in Oxnard.
NRG Energy had sought to build what’s known as a peaker power plant, which would be used to help meet power demand during high use times.
The proposal created a firestorm of controversy, with community activists saying it would be unfair to build another plant in a city which already had multiple facilities. And, environmentalists asserted the Puente Power Project wasn’t needed.
After a key California Energy Commission committee said it would deny the project, NRG received a number of delays to look at its options. The company has withdrawn its application, closing the book on the proposal.
