There’s a significant new development over a controversial proposal to build a new power plant on the South Coast.

NRG Energy has asked the California Energy Commission to halt its review of the proposed Puente Power Project in Oxnard.

Plans for the plant have drawn heavy opposition from the environmental community and area residents. The 262 megawatt plant was intended to replace two existing facilities at the site, which have to be phased out because they are cooled with ocean water.

After years of hearings, two members of the Commission took the unusual step earlier this month of issuing a statement calling for the full commission to reject the project.

An Orange County law firm representing NRG filed a two page letter with the Commission, asking for all review work to be stopped until the company decides whether or not it will withdraw its application.
