City Of Santa Barbara To Ban Plastic Straws

Citing environmental impacts, the Santa Barbara City Council has supported new rules to reduce the number of plastic straws and non-compostable containers in the city.

The public was outspoken on the issue in front of the City Council.

Environmental groups and children spoke out about cleanup efforts, mainly at the beach, that result in capturing many straws and containers that are headed into the ocean.

The ordinance will go into effect in January.

Councilmember Randy Rowse says that he doesn't see containers as much as he see the plastic caps from water bottles littered around.

One business, Blenders, which makes smoothies, is expected to ask for an exemption because substitute containers don't work as well for its products.

A plastics ban was also put into place on the south coast by the city of San Luis Obispo.
