The Coast Guard is planning a special ceremony for this weekend to honor the memory of an officer killed in the Channel Islands during an operation to intercept drug runners.
On December 2nd, 2012 Executive Petty Officer Terrell Horne was in a rubber boat deployed from a Coast Guard cutter which was trying to intercept some suspected drug runners near Santa Cruz Island. The smugglers boat hit the Coast Guard craft, and Horne suffered a fatal head injury. One of the two Mexican nationals convicted in the intentional ramming was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, while the second received a ten year federal prison sentence.
On Saturday, two Coast Guard cutters will go to the site for a wreath-laying ceremony. The Coast Guard also has plans to name a Coast Guard cutter in Horne’s honor.
