Car Chase On South Coast Ends With Flipped Car, Three Injured

A Monday afternoon chase from Lompoc to the Gaviota Coast resulted in two mangled vehicles and a crash that left three people hurt.

The Lompoc Police Department reportedly tried to stop a driver who left care in a hospital without permission.

The driver refused to stop, and the chase went down Highway 1 where the Sheriff's Department got involved but subsequently backed down.

The Highway Patrol picked up the vehicle in Gaviota, with the suspect driving on the shoulder at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.

At Refugio the suspect crashed, knocking a pickup truck over the side of the road down onto some railroad tracks.

The primary vehicle involved in the chase, an SUV, ended up on its roof.

The three people inside both the SUV and the pickup were hospitalized with minor injuries.

Trains had to be stopped for at least an hour, and traffic was backed up for miles during the cleanup
