Authorities Identify Man and Young Son Killed in Apartment Fire on South Coast

Authorities have released the names of the father and young son who were killed in an apartment fire on the South Coast.

The Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office said 24-year-old Mario Rangel and his five-year-old son, Diego, died from smoke inhalation.

The fire happened around 4 a.m. on Friday in a two-story apartment complex on the 200 block of East C Street in Port Hueneme. Neighbors told firefighters that Mario got his wife and daughter out of the home safely and then went back inside to save his son. But both got trapped inside and died.

Firefighters knocked down the fire in about 15 minutes. One firefighter suffered smoke inhalation.  About two dozen people were displaced. No word yet on a cause of the fire.
