As police in Santa Barbara were checking a man for warrants, the situation took an unusual turn.
The suspect ran into the ocean and dove in.
The Harbor Patrol was immediately called in as the man began to swim away.
After carefully encircling the suspect and sending a diver into the water, authorities grabbed the man and placed him under arrest.
The suspect, identified as Shane Hale, was transported to Santa Barbara's Cottage Hospital before being taken to jail.
Hale was reportedly wanted in San Luis Obispo County, while the white Honda he was driving was reported stolen in Ventura County.
He was booked on charges of auto theft and resisting arrest. Other charges could be filed.
