The Arts Fund of Santa Barbara presents a collection by Hugh Margerum, recipient of The Arts Fund's 2008 Artist Award.

Circular Logic and other Dilemmas is a collection of recent abstract paintings that reflect Margerum’s ongoing interest in exploring the dynamic relationships between scale, figure and ground, and color. A long-time resident of Santa Barbara, Margerum describes his work as “an abstract interpretation of things that happen in nature and everyday life.” These energetic organic compositions delight the eye with their use of vivid color and adventurous applications of rich layers of oil paint. Lyric abstraction and abstract expressionism are clear influences in the works’ unapologetic celebration of the act of painting. At the same time, California landscapes and the dynamic processes of nature are equally present in this mid-career artist’s impressive body of new canvases.
