The remains of a man who died some 10,000 years ago have been returned home to the South Coast island which was his home. A man researchers call “Tuqan Man” died, and was buried on San Miguel Island. In 2005, some archaeologists surveying a historic site in the islands found the remains exposed in a gully.

The remains of a man who died some 10,000 years ago have been returned home to the South Coast island which was his home.

A man researchers call “Tuqan Man” died, and was buried on San Miguel Island. In 2005, some archaeologists surveying a historic site in the islands found the remains exposed in a gully.

Santa Ynez Valley business owners, especially those in the tourism industry, have their gameplan set to bring back visitors after the Thomas Fire and Montecito mudflow.

The two disasters also had an impact on the Santa Ynez Valley.

The Army Corps of Engineers has made a major new financial commitment to repairing a badly damaged breakwater at a Central Coast port.

More than 600 feet of breakwater at Port San Luis, in San Luis Obispo County is failing. Officials say the damaged port infrastructure puts Avila Beach, boats, and the port facility itself at risk from major storms.

Firefighters quickly knocked down a small brush fire in eastern Ventura County which burned close to some homes.

The fire was discovered just after 4:30 Tuesday afternoon in a rugged canyon behind Arroyo Vista Street, north of Highway 101 in Newbury Park.

President Obama wants to finally make good on one of his signature campaign promises: closing the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The Republican-controlled Congress is unlikely to go along, but the debate has raised another question: If the prison closes, what would happen to the naval base itself?

The Claim

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz warned about handing over the entire base in a debate this month on CNN.

Ailing electronics maker Sharp has accepted a takeover bid from Foxconn, the company that assembles iPhones. After the deal was announced, Sharp's stock fell more than 14 percent. And Foxconn now says it will postpone finalizing the sale due to late-arriving information.

The title of this followup to V.E. Schwab's 2015 fantasy novel A Darker Shade Of Magic might be considered a warning for impatient readers: In A Gathering Of Shadows, plenty of shadows gather. Portents simmer. Tension mounts. Disaster looms. Evil threatens. But nothing much comes of any of it until the final pages, which dash to an intense cliffhanger ending.

When Taevin Lewis first arrived at Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis — a long plane ride from her native Tennessee — she was a little lost.

"I didn't know where to go," remembers the sophomore biology major. "I didn't know where a lot of the offices were."

And it wasn't just the campus map. She didn't know some of the basics of college life: How to sign up for classes, how to sign up for a campus job, how to maintain a checkbook.
